Photo Friday - Statement - If the razor wire

If the razor wire atop the chain link doesn't make a statement itself, then the small stone building built by inmates at the Missouri State Penitentiary in 1937 had to. It was the Missouri Gas Chamber. The location of 40 executions. Other than the line to get into the Penitentiary, the Gas Chamber had the longest line of anything inside the walls during the open house to the public. The open house ran yesterday (10-23-04) and today (10-24-04). Until being decommissioned last Thursday (10-21-04) this was the oldest working prison west of the Mississippi.

The 1,355 inmates inhabiting the facilities were moved to the new Jefferson City Correctional Center September 15, 2004, leaving the old prison vacant.

If you would like to see more pics from the open house you can see them here.
